It's that time of year again.... Rosh Hashanah!

Not as fancy as last year was, but this time at my mom's restaurant.

Challah, apples w/honey, beef tongue with some kind of mustard sauce, home made cured salmon (lox), Kedem (?) sweet white grape wine, home made kugel (though nowhere near as thick as in the link), chicken soup with pieces of chicken, stewed fish heads for the grandparents (dunno what fish it is), fruit, etc. Twas yummy

I export Pain and vodka.... and I'm all out of vodka. Wait, no, just found some more

    made this tues night,
first time making lasagna, pretty standard with ricotta and mozzarella, sauce was classico tomato, with 2 lbs of beef, lots of basil minsed garlic, oregano. and slice olives. ran a little short on the moz for the top so improvised with Parmesan/romano.

    [IMG][/IMG]

and for tonight, simple 1/2 lb burgers. seasoned with garlic, crushed pepper worcester and hickory. slowly grilled and two thick slices of cheddar. i thought about going fancy with the shredded cheese inside and other stuff, but i wanted to keep it simple and mainly beef and cheese.

some mayo ketchup garden fresh tomato and a light spread of ranch an voila. i know not fancy like the blue cheese crumble burger, but was looking for mainly meat and cheese.

I miss a good holiday meal - my mom doesn't do anything for any of the holidays now that all of the kids have moved out. I need a good brisket and kugel dinner - maybe I'll make one this weekend. Do you prefer a sweet or savory kugel? I like the kind with ricotta and raisins.

My mom and grandmother make it a little sweet, but with caramelized onions (something I personally don't like). The sweetness comes from the onions and the matzah itself, not from any added sweeteners.

My mom always made a sweet noodle kugel. My grandmother makes a potato one, I think it has onions in it also. I need to learn to cook Jew food.
