What's under my fireplace hearth? Deconstruction question...
I am thinking of doing some work around the house and this was a project I thought I might be able to tackle myself. My question is, where the hearth sits above the wood floor (12" tall and 18" wide), would the tile be sitting on a wood frame or some sort of concrete block?
My plan is to flush the tile with the hardwood floor, keep the same tile space, but gain the vertical floor space back and lose the hard raised corners.
Let me know if any more explanation is needed of what I am trying to do... Also, thanks in advance for the help!

ps - please excuse the shoes and dirty fireplace, not a lot of use in FL!####

I'm pretty sure its just wood. There really is no need to put extra support under the tile so they just frame it with wood.
