Thread: Residential wind turbines

Have you checked into any of the vertical turbines? I don't know how they compare to solar, I've just heard some people locally here talking about them.

vertical wind turbines are less efficiant/size then a horizontal wind turbine because of less swept area, also you need a tall mast/wires so you can't go as tall. If you read independent reviews of wind/solar generators, 99% of the time they see WAY lower output then advertised, giving a much higher ROI where you need to really think if its worth all the hastle. We have cheep hydro here, so it doesn't make sense for us

Before any real company will install wind turbines they would come out and wind map your plot of land. I think it is a couple bucks and they can tell you if your land is suitable and the best way to make sure of available energy. Solar + Wind compliment each other, for wind when there is no wind there is no power with solar you aren't making power at night.

The company I called wanted $1500 to due a six month wind study! I got a quote from a solar installer also, my utilities are so low right now it would take almost double the amount of time to get my ROI.

My parents had planned to get a wind turbine installed at their house, ran the numbers and it would been less than a 4 year ROI, but every company they have been ready to place an order with suddenly stops returning phone calls when it comes down to it. Seems like a very shady business in my area.
