Honestly it will depend on your taste. Do you like Medium, Full, or Mild flavors. If you can decide on that first it will help on any help. Also check out cigardave.com. He has a wonderful radio program that may help.

The best ones are the ones you enjoy the most. Smoke what you like, like what you smoke.

Arturo Fuente and Gloria Cubana brands are likely to appeal to both novice and more experienced smokers, and are generally reasonably priced and easy to find. I think these are some of the best general purpose cigars, as you can find them, smoke them, and let a friend smoke them easily.
In terms of more expensive and high end cigars, Arturo Fuente Opus X and Davidoff Zino Platinum are good candidates. I generally find Cuban brands to be overrated and overpriced, and more a fascination in the US because they are hard to get.

I don't see this as a true statement, as far as being overpriced. A 50 cab of PLPC's is under $250, and is an excellent cigar. Some Cubans do command a high price, but I'd rather have a box or 2 of Cohiba Lanceros than whatever HTF Tat/Viaje is coming out next. Though I love the Viaje Skull and Bones ? release.
Everyone's tastes are different. Some people don't like Cuban cigars. Others love them. I have not found a non-cuban cigar that tastes anything like a cuban cigar.
Also, as a general rule, Cuban cigars do well with age, where as most NC's tend to fall flat on their faces when aged. An NC that ages well is more of an exception than the rule.
Maybe some people are fascinated by the fact that they are hard to get. I really just like smoking good cigars. I don't care where they come from.

Another tip for a beginner when first smoking the rectum smuggled Cubans is to listen to Chris Brown - Deuces. Give's it a whole new meaning.
Currently compiling a list of all of the cars I currently own and used to own, but are now sold so I can be like everyone else.

I prefer the cubans, because of their full taste and strong aroma
I smoke Cohibas most likely. (you get them in almost every shop, that has a humidor over here)
