Hell yes. Ceramic bowls are junk compared to clay. Ceramic bowls can't hold heat very well so your session can go from weak clouds to huge clouds to harsh as hell smoke in about 30 seconds. There are different types of clay bowls available. The most common is the standard egyptian bowl which is cheap and always good to have around. Then social smoke makes a clay bowl using a different clay that is very good and better made than an egyptian bowl. If you want the best, go for a tangiers phunnel bowl. They are the highest quality clay that hold heat the best and makes heat control a breeze. They are all handmade by a pottery place in san diego. I own all of the above and a few others and honestly, I use all of them equally because all work better for certain things. None of them are that expensive so if you feel like taking the dive, go for all three.

Sorry for the super late reply man, sounds good to upgrade all at once. Egyptian hookahs will usually come with an egyptian clay bowl so you don't even need to worry about adding one to your order. Clay bowls are much stronger than ceramic bowls. I've heard of people braking ceramic bowls just by putting it onto the hookah with to much pressure, the only clay bowl I've ever broken was one that I dropped from about 4 feet straight onto concrete and even then it didn't shatter like ceramic would. I actually have a khalil mamoon hookah that I'm selling, it has always been kept in top notch condition. If you haven't already upgraded to an egyptian hookah and you're interested, pm me and we will work something out.

Here's an article I wrote a while ago that covers the different types of hookahs and parts, including bowls.

Do you guys only use your standard bowl for the best smoke? I've been looking at the funnel clay bowl to try out. Anyone have this or tried this bowl before?

I have five of them. They work great. Make sure you get a real phunnel bowl and not a chinese knockoff. The chinese ones are ceramic and won't work nearly as good as a real tangiers phunnel.

Is it best to put the coal in the center or on the sides and gradually move the coal around the bowl?

On the sides. If its in the center you'll just be sucking in hot air. What kind of coals do you use?

So far, for a bowl, the hookah flip is my favorite!
