    Default Humidor problems

Ok so my humidor used to sit around 68 to 70%. Now it has dropped down to 59%. I am using the gel cups for humidity. they have always worked well but now its not working.. Am I doing something wrong?

    how full is the humidor?

what's the temperature and humidity of the room that the humidor is in?

is there direct sunlight on the humidor?

did you add any new (and dry) cigars to the humidor lately?

lots of things can affect the humidity but they can all be corrected.

Also check how tight the seal is on the humidor.

open the lid, lay a dollar bill across the seal and close the lid.

If it rips you have a gangster seal. If it pulls out really easily you have a poor seal and will have problems keeping the RH and temp steady in the humidor, and if it pulls out but takes a bit of effort (yet doesnt feel like its going to rip) you should be ok.

The environment the humidor is in plays a large part in how it acts inside as madhatter mentions.

I would also look into getting Boveda humidity packets

I'm no expert, this is all stuff people have mentioned to me along the way...

How would this affect the humidity? I'm having the same problem as mentioned above, but mine is not as full as it usually is. I guess I need to buy more cigars?

Not trying to hijack your thread GT, but what kind of hygrometer are you using? And do you prefer one type over another?

For that matter, does anyone prefer one type over another?

    Thanks.

Gel cup only work for so long (year to year and a half). After a while they stop absorbing water. It could just be that they are out of life. When you fill them, are they still absorbing all the water that you are pouring into them?

as I've been taught. there is the 70/70/70 rule for keeping a humidor and it's contents happy:

    70% humidity
    70F
    at least 70% full

an empty humidor is more difficult to regulate then one that has a healthy quantity of cigars in it.

Great Comment! This is definitly the way you want your Humi to be, give and take a bit on the temp and humidity.

But in my opinion I would check everything that has been stated above first. Then maybe switch up the way you humidify your humidor.

I only trust quality Hygrometers and Humidification Systems when it comes to my cigars. I would suggest Diamond Crown or Xikar second to them. I have all Diamond Crown gear and check at least once a week on my cigars and never have a problem. Here is a link.
