Any Boston Audio connections here?
I love Boston Acoustics subwoofers. They are amazing, except for one little thing:
I have been using my JL 500/1 amplifier for the last couple years. 3 or 4 years ago, I purchased 2 G2 10'' subwoofers from a local audio shop. About a 1 1/2 to 2 years later, both subwoofers eventually had a problem, which I will describe soon. First only one subwoofer stopped working, and then later the second one stopped working.
So I figured my amplifier was too powerful since the subs were rated around 300rms and the amplifier can push up to 500rms, even though I always have the gain down way low.
I ended up upgrading to 1 G5 10'' woofer, which was rated at 400rms. A year later, the same issue had happened.
In the subwoofer's design, there are 4 wires that come from the terminals and connect to the voice coil. Each time I had a problem with a sub, one of those wires would eventually burn out somewhere near the middle of the path, severing the connection. Thus, the amplifier cannot get the signal to the voice coil.
I had a friend test all the subwoofers, and they still perform fine.
I am wondering how to recoup my investment, or preferrably get the subwoofers repaired. These wires shouldn't be burning out whatsoever.
Does anybody here have a good connection to a repair service or even boston acoustic? i have tried emailing them in the past but never recieved a response. I wish their customer service was as good as how their speakers sound.
Thanks for your help guys.

the design of the sub is why they burn up. Boston only offers a one year warranty on their products for a reason. The best subs made are JL audio. i would recommend a 10w6v24 with the 500/1 for the best performance combination. Bostons are nice but over the years I have seen your problem several times. A. the box air space is to large causing the subs to over excursion and snapping the tensile leads or the sub is no dissipating the heat fast enough and the leads are coming detached. Over excursion could be from distortion in the system some where or the amp dc.
can you give me some details of your system and i may be able to help.

That is debatable. The best subs made are JL audio.
It all depends on the application & sound you want.

The airspace in the box is a little more than a cubic foot of volume. That is unfortunate that the warranty only lasts 1 year. If you've seen this problem before due to too much airspace, I am confident that is the error causing the tensile leads to snap. I am attaching a picture of what it looks like. Unfortunately I don't know the exact size of the volume in the box.

Woven Tinsle leads tend to so that. The woolfer need to be recoiled and a new spider put in. Even it you sodder it back together it will just snap again. I would say the air space is off or distortion. Whats the model number and I will get you the info you need.
update: there is a rebuilt kit you just need to order the sps assembly from boston partshttp://mobile.bostonacoustics.com/Ma...SPS_Repair.pdf
problem solved. also the wollfer needs to be in .05 cubic ft enclosure.Last edited by SKilledA; 02-01-2010 at 10:38 PM.

You can try cutting the tinsel leads and then reconnecting them so they hang freely and arent woven on.
You need to get the right measurement, they need to be free enough to move to full mechanical excursion, but not touching anything other wise you will get tinsel slap.
Making out that JL subs are the best is a stupid thing to say, its subjective, there is no "best" and the latest tech such as Fi or even years old tech such as Digital Designs is definetly on par. They just dont have the marketing JL have and therefore dont appear in "baller" cars and therefore dont get the reputation. And this here, is my fourty five...

Finally called BA. $175 for the part. Thinking I might just get a whole new sub for that price.

Exactly! It pays to go off on your own and find what "you" like.
