Affiliate marketing
Hi guys,
Can someone school me on affiliate marketing? I think I'm using the right term, what I mean is earning money from a site other than via e-commerce.
My vague understanding is that you already need a successful website/forum/blog, and you can then earn money by selling ad space? Or is there any way you can earn money from a start up site?
Please bear with my layman's terms, this is new to me, I'm interested because I would like to generate some "hands off" recurring income.
Thanks in advance
Adam

If you are completely unfamiliar with it now, I have a very hard time believing you will be able to make any "hands off" recurring income from it. To be effective at affiliate marketing you need to know your way around the web and know things other people don't. That or you can sell your parents some stuff off Amazon and make 75 cents. If you are doing it for an easy extra job, look elsewhere. If you want to do it for the long-haul this is not the best place to learn and I would begin at internet marketing sites and read through all the noise there. Most of the informational resources are filled with junk but at this point you pretty much just have to filter through it and figure out what you can. It's not as easy as they make it sound on TV.

With respect guys I know there's no get rich quick method, that's why I asked on a group of professionals, so they could help me cut me learning curve. I'm perfectly aware it takes a long time, most businesses do.
I'm sure you started off knowing nothing about your trade at some point, I know I did.........

Sign up with VGIlink (Ran by Ray aka Club411) probably the easiest way to go.

Yes, every does need to start somewhere, I agree. There really are no shortcuts in affiliate marketing in my opinion though. You need to go read hundreds/thousands of pages about techniques and ideas etc. This is a really poor place to learn that in my opinion, you would be better off at digitalpoint forums or whatever other forums are popular for internet marketers now. I would start off over there and go from there. Your question is far too general and this is not the best forum to learn that much about a specific topic.

I don't know much about it, but like you, I'd like to know more. Having traffic helps, but people don't knowingly just click on ads for the fun of it. Even the ads here that run along the right side of the page ..I NEVER click on them. Your click through rate will be 1% or less I would think, and maybe less than that of people who actually end up buying something.

Affiliate marketing is all about traffic and conversions
You cant have conversions without traffic, so first pick your method of traffic and start reading/learning as much as you can.
You've got 3 Basic concepts for how you can get traffic
SEO
Pros - cheap to start, effective techniques last for awhile, builds long term recurring revenue, can be sold as a service if you're good at it, tons of reall good info out there for free
Cons - takes a long time to see results (unless you pay for it or go blackhat), tough to scale up
email
Pros - steady self generated traffic source, generally fixed cost for your volume, moderately easy to scale, small/moderate money investment relative to return, fast setup once you know what you're doing, good basic info and guidelines out there for free
Cons - need to keep new data flow coming in, steep learning curve when scaling above the level of "shared" solutions, constantly battling the spam filters, it's really half art form, half science... Gotta be able to write killer copy, and also Constantly split testing and optimizing.
Paid traffic, media buying
Pros - immediate results, adaptability, can easily change with the market or niche, top guys can do 5 figures daily with a 1 man operation
Cons - Usually have to lose thousands just to find winning campaigns, which then might only run for a few weeks and you're back to square one, constantly have to be creating and testing new campaigns, split testing and optimizing, easy to lose a lot of money, just about any info you find is garbage since the successful guys have to stay very secretive to maintain profitability
IMO...SEO is the easiest and lowest risk, for the slowest reward
Media buying is highest risk, and highest expertise, but also highest reward.
Good luck!"I spent 90% of my money on women, cars, and booze. The other 10% I wasted."
