Have you herd about Blackle.com?
I think this is a really cool idea.
This is a spin-off of google. It's basically the same except that the screen is all black and so are the search results.
The idea is that by having these "dead pixels" consumers can save x amt of energy emissions that the screen would normally have to use up in order to create the brightness the monitor requires.
Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search.
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002
In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.
We believe that there is value in the concept because even if the energy savings are small, they all add up. Secondly we feel that seeing Blackle every time we load our web browser reminds us that we need to keep taking small steps to save energy.
Blackle is always looking for new ways to encourage everyone to take steps in their everyday lives to be more environmentally conscious. To further this goal we are launching Blackle Mag where we will share tips, new green products and services and the latest eco news from around the world. Blackle Mag will be launching soon, but in the mean time please sign up now so that we can let you know when it goes live.True independence and freedom can only exist in doing what's right. - Brigham Young

Just a gimmick to get website traffic..“We found that the color on screen mattered very little to the energy color consumption of the LCD monitor,”Last edited by Jay; 11-04-2011 at 01:30 AM.

Agree with Jay. Pretty sure I have seen similar articles elsewhere

I'm going to have to disagree with the article above. It makes NO difference at all. It's a gimmick.
Make your screensaver black and turn off the lights in your room and see if there's any light coming from your monitor.
The LCD's aren't made with color panels that are also the light source. It's layered where the light comes from a back light and projects through the color pixel layer.Last edited by IamStephen; 11-04-2011 at 01:47 AM.

I am pretty positive you can install a pluggin into your browser to change the color.
Oh and a dead pixel's color is not black. The monitor still uses electricity to display black colors and also a dead pixel.

So they're feeding people a bunch of crap basically, as there is no benefit to a black screen?
