What's with the Angry Birds haterade?

Best of luck Stephen, I'm considering transitioning from a web agency to game development at some point.

Hey Steven, how's the app coming along so far? Making progress I hope. I wanted to state this before but it kept on slipping my mind: Regarding your opening post, I don't think the people that play AB play it for the storyline. They play it for the content, the storyline is there just as a backdrop to bring in more entertainment and drive to the user. People play AB because of it's simplicity, family friendly orientation, cuteness, and most of all for the fun. I'm not a big fan of AB myself, but I just thought I'd let that out there. Saying people play AB for their storyline is like saying people watch porn for the storyline. Regardless, I can't wait to see what you have in store for us!

Some pretty good points! It's definitely there as a backdrop to bring in more entertainment for sure. I gotta make my backstory even MORE entertaining

The thing with the story is, it seems subtle and almost unnecessary but it's actually one of the most valuable assets. Games like doodle jump that have no story don't connect with users and they don't care about him, which is why it's knocked down the charts. When you have characters and understand why they're doing what they're doing, you invest much more into it. If AB was just flinging birds into pigs for absolutely no reason, the user had no connection to wanting to help the AB. It would just be a cool sling shot game and that's it. The beauty of the backstory is that it's so subtle. As an example, every commercial has music in it, but when a commercial doesn't have any music it feels almost weird watching it, it becomes extremely boring. But only the lack of music in a commercial makes you realize the music in every other commercial.

Yes, I agree with the story establishing a connection between the user and the character in the game. That's why it's there as a backdrop. I just believe one should create a good and fun game and then develop a story around that. Developing a game around a story limits the product and wouldn't (in my opinion) create a game as entertaining if it were done the other way around. That's because you're putting more effort into the story than the game itself. Put down the foundation of the game and then you can change the "characters" and other "tools" to suit the storyline.

Btw: Sorry for mispelling your name in my previous post =P

I see your point. The game play mechanics are definitely #1 that's for sure. No matter what story you have if the game mechanics aren't fun it doesn't matter. My game just happens to have amazing game play mechanics, an amazing story line and features an awesome character

    ahaha it's okay!

I'm actually about to begin work with a developer to produce a 5 level polished prototype game which should take about a month to do. I owe the IRS $15k+ in taxes but I'm spending almost every dollar I have and a loan to produce it and if it fails, I have no clue wtf I'm going to do. BUT if it works out and after I test it with 100 people and they love it, I have an investor waiting with $100k. I gotta risk it all or nothing!!!

Thanks man!! I'm inlove with my character! He's sooo awesome!!! If you have an iPhone you can be apart of the BETA testers if you want!

That goes for anyone else also. PM me that you're interested in being a BETA tester and when time comes (in a month) i'll holla back!
