Thread: Who Can Tell Me Where To Find ?

Information on the biometric security industry ?

I have a friend who developed a prototype of a retinal scanner. It scans an image (already pre-treated) and creates a unique digital signature for that image, his prototype then compares it to another image and will indicate if the two are similar or mismatched

Now I'm wondering is this worth pursuing since the potential clients are usually governments,banks and the military ?
How does one attract investors for such a venture ?
And well I can't find any information on the costs of development, manufacture, or what the cost of one retinal scanner would be .....

Any help really is appreciated

I worked on the software and business development end of the business for a few years. Managing product and business development that did just that at an enterprise level. Both retina and fingerprint scanning and minutia analysis. At first glace, you / your friends product will need to do something else, quite unique to attract not only investors but potential customers as this is a pretty tight vertical market with some key players. IBM, NEC, LiveScan, Identix, Crossmatch, Guardian, etc. These are people that have been doing this for many years. And do it well. Let alone the customer base (public safety, DOJ, etc.) is very tough to get into as a small competitor with a single product.
Not saying it can't be done, but another like/similar product is going to be a tough sell without something unique to it, and the host of other applications and interfaces that host a stand alone retina scanner in a production environment.

Well first of all I'd like to thank you for responding as well as your valuable insight . I will consult with him and see what other products/ideas he might have in the pipeline.I'm a direct response marketer so even if this is miles away from my area of expertise, maybe just maybe we can find something completely unique or offer the device to untapped markets....just food for thought.

He is currently looking to bring together a team of developers and engineers for the future though. I'm just having one heck of a time finding any pricepoints for this technology.
