I sell jewelry on eBay. Big supplier of David Yurman jewelry. Since most of my auctions are $300+, I give eBay a shitload in fees. eBay used to cap out at $50 in fees but now it is $100 so my fees are usually 12% (9% eBay cap at $100 + 3% paypal). I have about 1500 feedback been doing it for a while. Recently got my powerseller taken off because I was on a break and now I am back in it.

Amazon isnt any better.
They give you postage credit but for example an xbox 360 super elite costs about £8 to post and Amazon credit me with £2.80. But i cant simply add £5.20 to my price because that puts me higher than the next guy, so I dont get the sale. So ive lost £5.80 already.
Then they charge fees then they charge VAT on their fee's, it works out around 25% in charges (inc postage).
When your profit margin is around 30% before fees it means you make 5% per item which is generally what i make. Fortunatly i sell lots a day.
This is why books are better than electronics, i buy books for about 9p each on average and they sell for around £8 each. And this here, is my fourty five...
