it takes a little more work and i've found that you need to stay in contact constantly. having a team in one place is still the best idea though b/c minor everyday encounters often lead to unexpected sparks & leaps of thought.

My business partner lives 10 hours away from me. I've known him since high school though. It does make it harder to get a startup off the ground. Would much rather have a partner local.

I've done this successfully. I'm in Chicago and the other guy is in LA. We hired him as a designer. He works from home 40 hours a week, and we installed a software on his computer that takes screen shots every couple of seconds. It shows us what he's been doing all day, and that he is complying to the terms of his work agreement. (Permission given by him obviously)

Skype is always up and running, and is used to face chat and share files. At the end of his two week pay period, his paycheck is deposited directly into his bank account.

It's a great way to utilize talent pools that are not local. Whether he works from California, the next room, or the moon, the employee would be doing the same work and communicating via the same processes anyway. This guy gets to work from a home office and say he commutes to Chicago everyday for work.

It's a little more complicated, but communication is the key. Fortunately, today with technology it is very convenient to stay in touch.

I have partners on the other side of the world, and we work great together. There has to be a common respect and trust.

If it's an unknown partner, do as much research and investigation as possible. Then trust your intuition and judgement on wether or not to proceed.

    Good luck!
