Any event/ club promoters here?
Sense my lending business idea fell through, I'm looking for ways to make a few bucks on the weekends. I thought doing some simple promoting work for a cigar lounge/bar as a side gig that might be both fun and profitable.
I've been checking out foursquare and it looks a LOT more in depth than I first thought. It looks to me that I could run this business almost 100% from my phone and have very small expenses. Check these cool features ( https://foursquare.com/business/venues ) I would have to "claim the venue" in order to do this stuff, but it doesn't look like there is a cost involved and the owner of the store knows me very well.
To any promoters here, do you use foursquare in your line of work, and what other apps did you find useful?.True independence and freedom can only exist in doing what's right. - Brigham Young

I have extensive experience in both club promotion and one off DJ concert type events, as well as in business/academic type events.
Feel free to PM me questions or ask here. To start as a promoter you either need to have a huge network or be booking irresistable talent."Whatever you're thinking, think bigger." - Tony Hsieh

Or you can carve out a niche with an underserved demographic that has the inclination to spend a good amount of disposable income on a consistent basis. Unfortunately as time has passed, that's become harder and harder to identify.
As a side gig, I was a club DJ and later a promoter for close to a decade in San Francisco. I learned quickly that you had to make sure that there were always a good ratio of females to males at your event (unless you were promoting to a gay demographic), that these women had to be more on the attractive side and you had to promote an environment where they were comfortable and DTP (down to party). Electronic media alone is not going to attract this crucial demographic - - you have to get out and find them.
The very first party I promoted was talked about for years afterwards, as I literally had a noticeably higher ratio of ladies to guys there. Female friends of mine were complaining all night asking "there's too many women here, where are all the guys?" I told them to come to the next event, as word will have quickly filtered out and the guys would show up. Sure enough, the ratio was 50-50 at the next event, everyone was happier and a successful party was established for the longer-term.
My secret to preventing a serious sausagefest? I had a run of guest passes made up that stated they were "For Ladies Only".When I'm not here, I'm slinging IT infrastructure or gone golfing

^ He has some great points. I promoted for night clubs and had the same strategy but over time those "party people" grow tired of that scene. I deal with nightclubs, strip clubs, and concert/venues. Each of them you have to have a different strategies and tatctics when trying to gather the masses. I actually hire/pay a street team and pay for advertisement in several different papers/magazines/newspapers. You have to always look at you demographics of whats gonna actually spend money at the event.

I forgot about concerts!. Kicking back with rock stars at the hotel after the show would be an awesome job imo.
