    Default The journey you took

With so many members on l4p and people around the world being successful (in their own eyes), I have always admired those who have risen to the top to be where they are.

I am fresh out of college and working towards owning my own company within the next few years. Being considerably young, all of this is quite new to me but I'm ready to take on the challenges ahead. Working in the exotic end of the automotive industry, I meet some amazing characters. Each and every one of them got to where they are by busting there ass in one form or another. We each have our own dreams of where we want to be in the future and I enjoy listening to those that are older/wiser than me on how they made it to where they are today.

I'm not looking for advice specifically on what to do; just would like to hear the stories of fellow members. How deep you go into detail is up to you.

For example, a client of mine went to ASU for journalism back in the 60's and also was a Scottsdale PD for a few years. He went back to chicago later on to help his dad run a restaurant where he later met Ray Kroc. From that point on, Ray Kroc saw how he ran his father's restaurant and offered him to run any McDonalds in the country of his choice. He now currently owns 15 McDonalds and isn't stopping.

the best time to take a risk is straight out of college - b/c you aren't getting paid much anyways. might as well take a job w/ huge upside - be that excellent experience, company ownership, or both.

in every endeavour, i ask myself what is the upside? if a job has no upside (aka salary + bonus), i pass. i will always own something (eg, equity) & the more ownership, the more i will sacrifice short-term salary.

if a business situation does not offer hope & upside, i get out of it.

this is probably a symptom of being in Silicon Valley, but i also think of career in 4-year chunks. if nothing has happened at 4 years, get out. it only takes 4 years to go from a dead broke idiot to a filthy rich genius.

Chuck hit it on the head. Go young. I'm fresh out of University and was in Political Science. In the past year I've busted my ass to learn everything I can about entrepreneurship and the startup space. I've turned down big opportunities in politics to follow my passion. I'm hoping to start something on the side while currently working in a technology company learning the ropes. Be a sponge.

People don't just 'get lucky'. Work hard, show up, get out of your comfort zone, and do something you love. Luck will come.
