Question Anyone run an e-commerce site? I need software!

I've been looking for software solutions for our website, and we're looking at free open-source software that we can use, like zen-cart.com , but read that it had some bugs.

What e-commerce software do other people use here?, and how much is it?

    Thanks.

Yes, thats where we found zen-cart. We found another called Magento, which seems very good, however I'm still a bit questionable about free software like this.

OSCommerce and ZenCart have A LOT of back door issues. Mainly having script injections that can wipe your site and your customers information.

When it comes to this type of business utility, its best to pay for peace of mind.

Agree 100%. When you're dealing with huge liability issues that come with an e-commerce site, you can't cut corners on the cart. Do it right or wait until you can afford it.

I had mine custom built, but if you want the reference to the developer, let me know. His work is great. Not sure if I should/can post the link of my site here.. it's automotive related, but if you want to check it out let me know I'll send you the link so you can get an idea of his capabilities(Edit: just realized it's in my profile/contact area..).

Lol, don't bother with custom built ones - they're a huge security risk if you don't have a real development team that works a 9-5 for you.

Magento is the best, good luck with it. I can also manage your e-Commerce site for you, check the link in my sig.

    Cheers

I'd say that Magento is one of the best options out there currently.

I'm actually looking for a platform also, something that would be easy to add customers to and process monthly service charge payment to my customers.

    What is the application?

Shopify is great if you just need something simple, that is a great all-around package

BigCommerce is good as well, but its a more powerful solution. This could be good, or bad. If all you need is something simple: Shopify, not BC. All the extra features in BC makes it more of a pain for smaller applications

Also, me personally, I like the free pre-made themes of Shopify more... but thats completely subjective.

For Shopify, prices range from $25/month all the way to $700/month. Just depends which version you want/need.

Big Commerce prices range from $25/month to $300/month.

Pricing for these are like cell phone plans. The more you pay, the more features you get.
