Default Turning an idea into a product / patents

I've been thinking about a couple products that I'd eventually like to produce and sell. This simple idea is something that I feel many talk about but rarely fully understand.

Can someone run me through the process from idea to production as well as patents and where they fit in? Thanks.

Keep everything close to the chest.

Research patents that already exist in your area.

Be as vague as you can in your patent application to include as many variants of the device/technology/product you are developing.

Get a lawyer to help you through the application.

If a manufacturer/existing company offers to buy you out, don't go cheap, but do your homework on what it would take you to do what they do.

A consult with an IP lawyer will get you pointed in the right direction.
It's not a hard process, but does require some time, and a few bucks to protect your initial interest. First things first, if it makes sense, you'd probably want to spend the money on the patent application / filing. Once that is done, then you'll be on your way to development, prototyping, manufacturing and so on.

Get a good attorney. Best advice anyone can give, I assure you.

If you fill out the preliminary app and a few words are off, or left out, or match another products, you are screwed. It can take years of work and throw it in the shitter. Also, you are limited to what is on your initial app throughout the entire process. The last thing you want to do is not cover your entire design, and allow other companies an opportunity to make a derivative of your hard work.

Also remember, this process takes 3-5 years, and any where from $15,000 minimum, to $50,000. That of course is the price to have a well informed and prepared attorney to do it correctly the first time.
