On one hand the right person can use this opportunity to get himself in the door and turn shit into gold, on the other I feel like if you're paying someone 10k he's going to come to work worrying about his bills rather than whatever he's assigned.

As a very recent law school graduate, sitting for the bar this July, I find this very disheartening. I am an absolute member of the "long haul" experience school of thought...but this is just highway robbery. I've heard stories about a lot the small firms taking advantage of the weak market, putting out jobs that are FAR below fair wage standards (i last heard $25k for here in NY)--and this just goes to prove it. I hope that the poor soul who takes the position moves on quickly and to better things.
Personally, I am one of the lucky ones--i have a job. I will be a judicial clerk for a 1 year term, and although it doesn't pay as near as the private sector does (50k), it will equip me with skills that will hopefully propel me into a bright future. I firmly believe that you should always take experience over money when you're young. While it's nice to grab the money early on, the chess master is always better off than the checkers player."A lawyer with his briefcase can steal more than a hundred men with guns."BMW 335i Coupé / Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean (2900.50.91)

i make more than that as a part time intern at $15/hr...experience or not, i feel like there is more to the posting. maybe its 10k base with the opportunity to get paid more per case or based on your performance, etc? idk but offering just 10k is ludicrous as the article suggests - that's why i feel like theres more to it.

I think they are really on the A game with this one, why not have cheap smart labor. If I was a business owner the less money I have to fork out the better so why not? Someone will always be willing to do the job cheaper and in this economy with all the students trying to figure out if they should go to grad school or law school to try to wait out everything, and as soon as it's all said in done they have to get a job. I say genius.

32 inquires huh? Who's paying those peoples' bills? $10K/year does not even cover your loan payment for an ABA school.

Good thread. Would read again.
Not really sure why anyone has a problem with this. Either someone will take the position because they feel it is worth it, or they wont and the company will have to pay more. Its really very simple.
If I was fresh out of law school and an opening came up, and I didnt have any other prospects, Id definately take it. Stepping stones and connections are everything.
