Default BMW Extended warranties for M cars

I am looking to purchase either an 06 M6 or a 08 M3 within the next few months and the first thing on my list is an extended warranty for the cars because repairs are expensive. What kind of warranties exist? What do they tend to cover/not cover? What can I expect to shell out for the M6 warranty or the M3 Warranty (roughly)? Where should I purchase it from?

As you may see I am completely clueless. What I mainly want is the best possible coverage to cover stuff like replacing a broken transmission etc. I am willing to pay for that premium that will leave me with a peace of mind.

I had a Platinum Extended Warranty on my 06 'M5 which helped me quite a bit when the SMG pump failed amongst other things since it was an early build 06. The original warranty on my 08 M3 is about to expire pretty soon too <1k miles left and I'm thinking about getting the Platinum again or might be selling the M3, not totally sure yet as I've had it since day one and has been great with no problems whatsoever.

When I got it for my M5, it was close to 4k for the warranty which was a comprehensive 4 year or up to 125k miles. I had gotten it when the car was at 60k miles. I used Carchex and then bought it through there.

    Hi Clueless,

    Welcome to l4p.

With either car you can expect electrical, SMG and typical wear and tear items such as brakes, suspension, etc.

Most of these cars have not yet racked up a lot of miles. Those that have seem to have a SMG Pump and solenoid issues. BMW did a recall on '06's (I think and replaced some of the gear which may or may not have worked depending on who you ask).

both cars are semi exotic in that they have 10 cylinder engines, high compression, a ton of electronics and options and of course SMG

If you opt for a 6MT, you will get increased reliability and possibly more of a fun factor, but a slower car...

My advice to you is to get a car with BMW's CPO Warranty.. Its $2995 from the dealer and covers the car for 10 years or 100,000 miles.

The CPO warranty sounds exactly what I'm looking for. I would never have even considered an M-car without looking at a warranty after seeing some of the prices on crap that breaks.
Thanks for the tip! Hope I'll be able to find one I like in my price range soon.
