    Default 08 M3 vs 06/07 M5 vs 06/07 M6

Thinking about selling my current car and getting into one either an M3, M5, or M6 but so hard to choose one over the other. I'm guessing the M6 is the fastest and probably best all around performing choice. So far, that's the one I'm leaning towards as it's also the better looking of the three, at least to me. But, I'm trying to stay around 40k or less and that puts me at 50k+ miles for just about everything I'm finding. Are these cars still a good buy at higher mileage? Are there any big tech differences between the 08 M3 and 06/07 M5/M6? What do you guys think is the best buy for the money?

    Thanks in advance!

hey man just a thought the m5 imo is the best out of those 3. It has the family sedan look to it and the racing sedan look at the same time. I found two that looks pretty cool for under $40k 06'. 48,000 kms on one, being from my city if you would like a link just reply back! I am not sure If you are allowed to post links on forum

They hold up pretty well, but I wouldn't want to buy one out of warranty. You are looking at very high maintenance costs on all these cars. However....here is a 146,000 mile M6, so they must be very reliable when they get higher mileage!! BMW : M6 BMW : M6 | eBay

The M5 and M6 are almost the same in performance. The M6 coupe is the "fastest". However, someone is always "faster", even in a civic, so that shouldn't be the determining factor. For the sleeper effect, the M5 would be the best choice. Also you can claim to other people that you have a family sedan capable of beating up on Ferrari's, lambo's etc. With the M6, you can't use that excuse...especially when you lose haha.

    Like others have said

It really depends on your goals

Do you need 2 or 4 doors?

Do you want to drop the top

Will you be driving this car daily? If so, are you aware of the horrendous gas mileage that comes along with the v10.

I've racked up about 18K miles in 3 years on my m6, and it's been mechanically bulletproof. And I can assure you that they haven't been easy miles.

My warranty repairs to date have been:

    two conv top motors
    passenger top seal
    CCC Module (Controls the I-drive)

That being said, all 3 cars have a TON of computers, electrical systems, and a lot of potential for high expense bills once they begin to age. Be sure and do your homework and get a PPI done before you buy and budget some money aside for maint and repairs.

Agree with this because your $40K car could end up costing you a lot more than you think. I think that is the highest mileage M6 I've ever seen. The maintenance done on that is prob between $10 and $20K. There is a low mileage M5 on the forum someone is selling for $41K obo.......do a search.

I had that exact decision 4 months ago, test drove all 3, and ended up with the M6. I don't think you will go wrong with any of them.

Well I definitely don't need 4 doors.. I bought a denali because I figured I'd need something for the winter but it seems like winter is never coming so I'm tinkering around the idea of selling. I know all about crappy gas mileage.. best mpg car I've ever had was my C6 that I sold nearly a year ago. But I only drive to school and back and work from home so gas isn't a big issue to me.

Anyone know of some good BMW M forums where I can see cars for sale? Research technical stuff/issues that people have? Would love to try and find an M6 in a couple months that at least has an aftermarket exhaust since I'm sure that'd be about all I'd want to do it. I think the V10 sounds amazing : )

I would say they are all absolutely equal in terms of performance, cache and reliability... I know it sounds cliche; but it comes down to what your needs / wants out of the car are.

I personally prefer a coupe and a smaller car, therefore an E92 M3 works for me. My business partner drives an M5 because he has a child and prefers larger cars.

You're not gonna go wrong any way you choose.
