Default Let's talk about the M1

I've always loved this car - for many reasons. The first of the M cars, the real beginning of the BMW straight six lineage of motors, mid engined for neutral handling, beautiful in its simplicity of design and detail, racing inspired, very rare (455 total produced I think), far ahead of its time in performance and everyday usability. How many still exist in good condition 30 yrs later? I didn't see one in any of the garages on the ultimate garage thread which I found odd. I recently read of a clean one that had been sold at an auto auction for around $150k. That almost seems like a bargain in IMO. Anyone else have "a thing" for this unique and timeless classic exotic?

Yep - love the car - would love to own one someday due to the history etc (race or street). I agree, truly a timeless exotic. I personally put it up there with the Miura as want to have!

The M1's got a quiet unique and complicated history and was one of the major flops of BMW. That and the fact that its actually not a "bad" car makes it fancy to me but it doesn't make me want one.

You really think it was a mistake? It wasn't a sales success but I think it was a pretty damn good effort. And it has stood the test of time very well not to mention spawning the entire line of M cars.

Looking at it as the frist useable mid engined supercar concept it was remarkable.

But every single aspect in the building process was just a huge mess.

As usual TopGear summs it up quiet perfectly:
