    There was a news story on the radio this morning about a guy that crashed his build it yourself airplane and died.....

    people crash homebuilts and factory built planes all the time.

    oh come on now...you have just as much chance of getting killed scuba diving or getting pushed off a cruise ship. General Aviation is very regulated for the flying publics safety inculding home built aircraft. Currently 1.3 fatal accidents per 100,000 hours of flight. Now if you want danger check out the Reno air races. Jeff Lavelle set a new sport class record of 362 mph ...in a homebuilt

    Just bring a parachute and problem solved. I would never take off in a homemade aircraft without it.

    Ever try to open an aircraft door against a 100+ mph wind?

    Parachute (the right kind) makes a nice seat cushion ... but beyond that they are actually pretty useless.
