Since your parents are most likely the ones flipping the bill I'd say the choice is in their hands as it should be, my first car was a 2000 Jeep, I wanted a 240sx and other fast cars, so glad things went the way that they did because I now have a basically clean driving record and a nice low profile family wagon that is reasonably "fast" for daily driving. I know waiting and "settling for less" until you are in control of your own decisions sucks when you're that age, but it will pay off. Just get something average and mod it. The kids I grew up with who started out with fast/nice cars are now going backwards as they realize they can't afford what they drive in real life as the parents blank check expires. buy a civic and keep the exhaust stock

I would definitely recommend trying to pick up either a BMW E30 or E36 because with your price range you can find some decent ones. I have had both and they were great cars, fun to drive, reliable, not necessarily fast but all you really need. Be sure to pick up a manual though; much more fun.
