Well that's pretty cool Brian. You filter the slurry, that filter must take a beating. The controls of the mill, what you using?

If you feel like starting another project, you should do something similar to this, that lights up with LEDs. Have L4P light up via LEDs behind Lexan letters and then put a LED behind the crown... Sorry, I like to torment people with fun ideas.

It does indeed clog fast if something gets stuck! A small machining job can generate a cubic foot of swarf/chips so....

Mill is computer controlled. If you can draw/imagine it, it can mill it(incl some jigs).
I used to do a lot by hand, which is what paid for automated mill.

I'm a Mechanical Engineering student about to finish his Bachelors, so I know how your imagination can create anything. I edited my post as I realized that part sounded dumb when I thought about it. There is no way you could mill that base by hand and make it that accurate without spending forever on it. It would take days to do that by hand. The letters are what made me think you might have done some of it by hand and I have a feeling the brass balls were done by hand.

If you were to sell this creation, what would you charge?

I think it was ok to ask was it done my hand. As you know, hyperbolic spiral bevel gears and other such complex forms were once cut by 'hand' on manual machines, albeit with jigs, copy mills were also kings back in the day.

As for selling, I hadn't thought about it really, but Ive been told an agreement could be met with Raw if there was some interest and maybe bring them to the l4P store?. So, really, I have no idea about selling them, nor do I want to cross any lines.

BUT, now that all the design work is done and all that stuff, it is possible to make it viable pending numbers.
The main reason Id love to take part in something involving making more of them, is I feel if a member wanted one, then he/she should be able to obtain one. Im really found of this place, and all that goes with it, Im looking at the crest here infront of me and i feel it does the site justice for what the place offers. I sure would love to see it in a shot with a Ferrari, or Lambo, thats for sure!

Lets see what happens, I hate annoying the staff as I know they have a million and one things for doing.
I cant wait to take some killer pictures of it tomorrow, its supposed to be fine too!!

Right, but for this job, to do it by hand, would be insane. Matching the curves, even with a jig, by hand isn't easy. One mistake and you could end up being forced to scrap the whole piece. It takes more time to create a jig than it does to create a SolidWorks file of the part.

Have you ever thought about doing metal models of supercars?

Metal models as in machined from billet or fabricated miniatures? The fabricated types are pretty much done by other companies, some Chinese, and machining from billet, I dont know, sounds cool, but when you actually hold one in your hand, they are not that spectacular I think.
To cast in Al would probably make more sense, and be faster too.

    Brian,
Billet models. I think they they make for awesome office desk art. Who wouldn't like a highly detailed billet model of a Zonda R or an Agera R? Then you can go into models like this one, where you just sit there stunned in complete awe...

That guy is something else for sure! If I was going down that road which I intend to, Id build it full scale, and make a racer. It would cost not much extra, and you'd have the very same amount of work, and thinking to do. AND you would be able to drive on the track.

no, I intend making an F1/F3 style car. Including the engine, gearbox, and all internals.
