Default buy 1 new tire or 2?

On my way to work this morning when the tire pressure light went on in my '10 A5 3.2 s-line with 19" wheels. Tried to make it to the exit a couple miles down the highway but car started to shake and kind driver was pointing to my rear wheel, when I pulled over. Found a pretty decent size screw in it and it looks like the seam of the side wall started to rip.

I've got 17k miles on the car, driven in Florida. I checked online and looks like it's going to be around $300 for a new tire.

Do you guys recommend getting 1 or better of with 2?
Should I try the local tire shops, sears, costco, tire kingdom? or just head to the Dealer?

    Thanks for the advice.

My first instinct is to say you should get 2, but that's hard to say for sure without knowing how much life your tires have left. The high performance tires your S Line likely came with shouldn't last much more than 30k miles, depending on your driving habits, how often you rotate, whether you're lowered, etc. Basically, not enough info to provide a good answer.

Both tires should be replaced since you already have 17k miles on one. If the old one you have has some meat on it, you may be able to get $50 by putting it on craigslist.

Use a reputable tire shop that won't damage your rim. Independent Audi specialists or private tire shops are your best bet. Dealer will charge you 2x more on labor and material.

Here is what I do when I get a flat. I usually replace both but will keep the good tire as a backup in case I get myself in a situation where I get a flat and need a tire for temporarily until I can have them both replaced. However, my car does not have a spare tire. I'm not sure if yours comes with a spare but if it does then my little "tip" can just be disregarded. I also have an extra rim so that makes my "switching process" a little easier but none the less you may find keeping the good one beneficial.

I ended up getting 2 and keeping the good one just in case. when I stopped at the dealer they quoted me $650 + tax. Thought that was pretty low when I looked online and tires where $325ish each. I had them do the work and when I showed up she said she quoted me the wrong tires and they where more so she took 10% off, I also had a 10% off coupon I found in my e-mail so it was basically a steal.

She said those tires get about 20-25k, what do you guys estimate? I'm assuming i'll have to replace the other 2 at my 25k or shortly after.

    Thanks for the info!
