i've got an 04.5 A4 S line avant (ultra sport in the u.s), the only problems i've had with it has been a couple of coil packs, which was easily fixed. and the passenger window regulator, which i was told from audi was a common problem.
apart from the it's been a great car.

Those are definitely common issues with the A4. There was a recall on the coil packs on the 1.8T, but that only applies to car models that are older than 2005.5.
The 2005.5 used a 2.0T motor for the first time and it's been proven to be a bit better than the 1.8T in performance and reliability. The window regulators are a common issue for any older German/European car it seems and the A4 isn't immune to them. Luckily they are an easy fix. There are some modifications you can make to the regulators to make them a bit more robust than the factory plastic clips.
The things I would look for would be:
- A complete service record indicating synthetic oil changes every 5k
- Timing belt change if the mileage is over 80k
- Look for any cam seal or valve cover gasket leaks as that was also common
- Check the control arms to see if they are worn
- Also see if the coolant is pink. If the previous owner used anything other than G12 to top off the coolant, it needs to be flushed immediately. (same thing applies to the green Power Steering Fluid - They used Pensotin CHF11/Audi Fluid and anything mixed in with it NEEDS to be flushed out)
These are really great cars if taken car of properly. I've DD the A4's sister car (Passat) for 10 years since new without any major issues. As I mentioned in the PM, I'd be happy to check it out with you. Good luck!Last edited by fookie; 01-01-2011 at 02:48 PM.

+1 The timing belt and water pump are done at the same time.. most of the time, watch for that one as its pretty $$$ if its not already done. (if the car is between 70k-90k)
The newer Audis are rockstars but just check out those few things. If the prior owner did the correct service to it and didnt rally her to bad you probably have a nice car. I have had 4 Audi's now and will continue to buy because of my experiance with them.GMC 2500HD
