Looking to pick up an R34 - what to look for
I've recently moved to NZ where you can pick up GTR's for relatively cheap (compared to the states). I've never owned a Japanese car but I'm thinking about getting an R34. Any specific things to look out for? Such as what are common issues, etc.
Thanks in advance.

With the R34s, MANY of them are modded, and with mods there are obviously many garage done cars with cheap parts. Look for one thats as close to stock as possible, or one with all mods recorded and invoices/lists. Ask questions try to see if things don't add up with mods, because a bad mod could ruin the whole car for you.

This is pretty solid advice for checking out any car; due diligence will always pay off in the long run. Yes, it will definitely cost you more to find a car that has been properly cared for or modified, but just like anything else, you get what you pay for.
I'm sure you could find plenty of cheaper R34s that are modified to the hilt, but that's a role of the dice. Were the right parts used? Were they installed correctly? Were they tuned correctly? Was proper maintenance done?
Not sure if you have folks that offer this type of service in NZ, but Stateside we have brand-specific experts that will do a thorough, multi-point inspection on a vehicle that interests you for a nominal fee.
Many of these services cost several hundred dollars, but, you will know everything that is wrong with that particular car or what exactly it needs to be entirely road-worthy and reliable.
Lastly and most importantly, do your research! There is nothing more powerful than an educated buyer, and if you know what to look for and what you're looking at, you're already one step ahead of the game.

+1 on all the above.
I highly suggest getting it looked at by a reputable shop that deals with Skylines before you buy one.

Dude your in luck! If you do find a R34 you like and want to get it checked out take it to ST Hitec ( St Hi-Tec ). Soichi is know N.z wide for his tuning knowledge with GTR's and most of the GTR geeks nicknamed him "God" lol. As far as I'm aware before he moved to N.z he worked for Nizmo and he also has very strong contacts with Hks/Tomei/Top Secret.
As said above be very careful when your looking at buying, especially if it has been modified etc. There are some very nice examples out there but there are more dodgy ones so shop carefully and don't be afraid to ask questions!"I had a reoccuring nightmare that I was loved for who I am and missed the opportunity to be a better man."
