Laser Alignments

A wheel alignment aligns all the wheels according to manufacturer specifications. As a general rule, most wheels are designed to sit flat with the road and almost straight ahead. However, generally road cars have mild “toe-in”, where the front of the front wheels point every so slightly towards each other. This is to ensure targeted handling characteristics are met and to account for minor changes in the suspension geometry when the car is in motion.

Out of alignment wheels can affect vehicle steering and the car’s overall road manners. More importantly, tires that are out of balance can wear out more quickly and affect fuel economy, because they may be pointing too far in or out, effectively working against each other.

Corner Scaling / Balancing

Corner Scaling a performance or track day car is definitely one the most important preparation tasks in getting the maximum benefit of a modern suspension system. Proper chassis setup is particular to each car, driver and expected track conditions. Only a properly balanced car can full use of the dampers (shock absorbers) and anti-roll bars when tuning the suspension. If you’ve ever struggled to get a car to respond predictably to suspension changes, you probably were dealing with a car that was not balanced correctly to start with. No amount of “dialing in” the suspension will ever correct an unbalanced chassis.

To achieve a balanced platform, scales are placed underneath each tire to measure the individual weight of all four corners. If you can imagine each corner as four independent pogo sticks, the goal is to have the entire vehicle suspended evenly, so it doesn’t want to rock on any corner (sort of like an unbalanced washing machine scooting across the floor!). Balancing the vehicle involves making small suspension adjustments until the sum of the right-front and left-rear corner weights equals the sum of the left-front and right-rear weights. This process is essential in keeping the vehicle stable and predictable for all suspension movements. If you’ve spent money on suspension upgrades or are driving an exotic machine with a sophisticated coil-over system from the factory, maximum performance can only be obtained through corner scaling.
