2009 STI Sport Tech - Should I ?
Looking for a track/winter beater
Option 1: Found one that is used 30k miles with a 1 year warranty left. Any major flaws with this car I need to know about ? I don't want it to break down on me and have a ton of trouble
. What should I ask the seller ?
Option 2: Buy a new 2011 WRX (not STI, no gps, no premium sound, no sunroof, etc) with a 3 year warranty.
EDIT: Bought a 2011 WRX limited, picture on page 3!Last edited by NickS4power; 12-04-2011 at 04:46 AM.

Does a bear sh*t in the woods? Go with the STI, while you could bring the WRX up to par with aftermarket parts, the STI is the better choice performance-wise from the get-go, not to mention any options that the STI might have.
The early '08 WRX/STIs had some issues with the crankshaft, but that was all sorted out by the '09 MY. Once you've gotten comfortable with the factory suspension and braking, $1k will get you 300whp safely and reliably all day long.

Bears do, in fact, shit in the woods. A lot. So get the STI.

If your plan is to track it then go the STi. Even if you boost the WRX upto STi power your still missing;
- Brembo Brakes (Front and Rear)
- Harder/Track orientated struts and springs
- Larger rear and front sway bars
- More chassis welds
- Wider/Lighter wheels
- Front and Rear mechanical LSD (opposed to the WRX viscous LSD)
- 6 Speed box
- DCCD
- Si Drive
- Dual AVACS
- Stronger engine w/ alloy intake (opposed to WRX plastic intake from the LGT)
- Track orientated oil sump/pick up

As for mods, I would advise against any variety of "cold air" intake or hard pipe replacement, the MAF doesn't particularly agree with them on lightly modified cars. Here's what I would do for a solid and safe 300whp all day long...
Import Image Racing: K&N Drop in filter for 08-11 WRX/STi/LGT

Import Image Racing: Gimmick Motorsports V2 Inlet & Aftermaf Combo for 08-11 STi

Import Image Racing: CNT performance Catted Down-pipe for 08-11 WRX/STI

Import Image Racing: CNT Catback Exhaust for 08-11 Subaru WRX 4D sedan and 2011 sti

Import Image Racing: Walbro 255LPH Fuel Pump + Install kit for Subaru 08-11 WRX/STI

Import Image Racing: Grimmspeed 3-Port Electronic Boost Control Solenoid for WRX/STI/LGT

Then all you need is an open-source tune for your mods via the OBD port and you'll be at 300whp without breaking a sweat on 93 pump gas.

You do realize that motor wise they are the same right?Even if Subaru says differently, only big difference is the IC on the STI is a bit bigger than on 11' WRX. Power wise a WRX is faster on the streets than the STI.
For track duty yes the STI is better due to brakes, suspension and the 6 speed which allows shorter gearing. SI DRIVE sucks, period.
For a daily, a WRX is faster 0-100km/h, only has 5 speed so you shift less on the normal roads, costs a lot less when brakes are due...

Option 1. Cubix and Turbology are spot on why.
I am kinda biased though.
