According to Subaru's press releases, the asymmetrical rods effectively serve to increase stroke without having to redesign the external dimensions of the block. Here's a little reading...

Subaru FB-Series Engine: Subaru Flat-Four Engines – Car and Driver

Even though the stroke is slightly longer, the FB’s exterior dimensions are basically unchanged from the EJ’s. Subaru achieved this by employing asymmetrical connecting rods like those it used to increase the stroke of the flat-six in the Tribeca without drastically changing the engine. The lamb-chop-shaped rods also ease assembly of the bottom end.

I really really really like these BRZ's. If I didn't need a truck as a daily for work, I'd love to have one of these to shoot around in.

I have to admit, when I saw one in person for the first time, it grew on me that much more. Seems like a great "fun" car for the money.

thats pretty awesome.. but does that apply to the subaru and fr-s/gt-86 engines? the ones explained in that write up were of the 2.5L engine.. the brz/fr-s/86 run off of a 2.0L

The same principle applies to the FR-S/BRZ engine. It's a clever bit of engineering to maximize the efficiency of a given space without having to redesign or increase the size of the block.

Cant wait to see the pics!

I didnt get so excited when I first saw the production 86/BRZ on Speedhunters but when I saw it pass me I fell in love. I think it looks truly amazing even though many dont agree with me, but with stock wheels, tires and fitment it looks wierd.
