    Default MK3 Supra / 1uzfe V8 / Single Turbo Build Thread

    I stumbled upon these forums and I liked what I saw. Seems like a bunch of down to earth people and far away from a lot of the whiny forums (could you believe I got banned from RX7club for not owning an RX7??).

    Anyways, hope you enjoy the time line. I have changed a lot of stuff as I went through. This is a copy/paste from another forum. But I will then regularly update this one.

    First off I want to thank everyone who has helped me and continues to help with the build, you guys are spectacular. It really shows what true enthusiasts can accomplish.

    This build is built by the minds behind Quantum Auto - visit Quantum Auto

    and watch this video by Quantum - Sub Focus - Rock It - Quantum Auto Promo - Lexus SC400 Toyota Supra and MR2 - YouTube

    Now moving on. I purchased this car last year for next to nothing. Came as an original turbo/auto shell with 90K on it. The body is in really good condition despite being 22 years old.

    This car originally was going to be a 1uzfe/W58 daily driver... But after putting it all together, it made sense to not stop there. Soon after the idea of single turbo became apparent.

    As the car currently sits, before I tear it apart again:
    1uzfe w/ stock ecu
    W58
    Quantum-Auto manual swap kit
    Crown Vic (BBS) Wheels
    Tokico Illumina front/blown stock rears - this is how I picked it up as
    H&R springs
    ABS Delete
    JVTR 3 row radiator
    unfinished dart-izumi exhaust

    And the plans for the next few months include:
    Holset HX52 *Billet Compressor Wheel* (single turbo)
    Custom SCH10 SS304 Manifolds
    3.5" Exhaust
    Blitz Nur Spec Muffler
    Tial 44mm Wastegate
    Tial 50mm BOV
    Megasquirt 3x with fully custom harness
    Stitch Weld the entire car
    Shave the engine bay a bit
    Battery and Fuse Box Relocation
    Aeromotive FPR
    Walbro 255lph pump
    Custom -8AN fuel rails
    RX7 460cc injectors
    Electric MR2 PS pump
    Relocate Alternator to other side, reduce down to only 2 pulleys
    R154 or Solstice Tranmission
    Feramic 6 puck clutch
    Tilton Slave

    ================

    After some hammer action (pre89 issue) to the firewall, subframe, and my brain, I got it to fit perfect. These pics will show a progression from when it went it, cleaning up the wiring and whatnot. And a small video of how it sits right now, before the surgery continues...

    So I started to pick up parts for my turbo setup.

    Got some MegaSquirt 3x action going on...

    Thats it for now, I will update when I can!

    ===============================

    Okay stripped a good portion of the interior today. Im removing the sound deadening and stitch welding it. Drop some weight and make it stiffer, bingo!

    Found an AT&T LG phone in the car, any of the past owners (few on this site) want to claim it haha?

    Started to take some stuff out of the engine bay...

    Pile of shit

    Some stripping...

    Got a bunch out today... with only 3lbs of dry ice I got most of the main cabin taken out.

    ===================================

    Got more done today than I planned! Stitched welded a good portion of the car.

    Still needs to pull the dash... its just super uncomfortable sitting in the car without any seats...
    =================================

    Finished the cabin... need to do rear shock towers back still... but for now...

    ========================

    Okay Finished all the inside stitch welding.

    And I love this saying...

    Anyways, since I am removing the heatercore/evap/all ducting but keeping the blower motor, I ordered 10ft of 2.5" air vent ducting to run some sort of circulation system in the car.... stripped or not, sitting in a car with still air in the summer sucks. Should see that soon.

    Alright so I moved the fusebox into the cabin of the car today... I did finish, but the batteries died on the camera... but here is some shots.

    It is pretty cleaned up now and works still.

    And I go to get some food and my car is now lazy... lammmeee

    haha

    Im taking a few days off to visit my girl, so enjoy for now...

    ======================

    Okay well pics have been done for a bit, but now back up . Alright I took a small vacation to give myself a break, but I am back on it. My original goal of a simple 4-1 manifold setup will not work, it just does not clear... oh well, waste of 2ft of SCH10 piping.

    So now I made some 2-1 collectors, waiting to weld them, so no pics yet .

    Busted ass on the MS3, I am ready to install the actually MS3 cpu and the expansion board next.

    =====================

    Picked up a Volvo 2 wire fast idle valve, should work well and very simple.

    I cleaned up the engine bay wiring a lot today... pulled more and more out...

    This stuff still needs to be pulled through and cut off

    Car has seen better days..

    Pulled awhile ago but yeah

    Some collector action

    Came with a free Walbro, didnt even know!

    Remember that good old body harness for the enginebay into the fuse box and into the cabin... its been reduced to the following...

    $100 R154... and $20 driveshaft... SCORE!

    ENJOY!

    ===================

    Okay so I cut some more collectors.... ran out of SCH10 piping, so thats the next order...

    And this is my entire body harness for the engine bay, into the junction box in the cabin and to the fuse box... I am sure there is a few more I need to add... but that really large and heavy harness is 1/4th of what it used to be.

    And the SC.... still truckin' me along.

    If you have no seen it yet, I posted this yesterday on youtube. Small video I made for Quantum. Enjoy!

    =============================

    I borrowed my friend's Mclaren alternator to mock up... ordering one of my own soon. Its a 1 wire, 140amp, small alternator... It is the tits.

    Seems like it fits...

    Waiting on my flanges to come in still... but I am using stockers to mock up at least... Mig SS wire is not at all pretty.... luckily its getting tigged for the final steps.

    It just grazes the frame rail.... little notching and we are good to go... Its a tight fit to anything turbo related here.

    Also cut down the stock oil filter piece... going to run lines and relocate it so it will clear the alternator.

    Thats all for now... got a bunch of stuff coming in the mail.

    =====================

    Okay you would think more has progressed over the last month... but you would be wrong. Been working on getting the SC in shape (bushings, sway bars, and countless issues)... And then its been a downward spiral on the Supra as well....

    I started on the passenger side manifold and after almost completing it, It would have never cleared a 4" downpipe, so I scrapped it and will be redoing it to look like the driver side to give me more clearance....

    My girlfriend bought me front/rear bushings for the Supra, so she helped me get the front ones in (truly a keeper ). So then I started to work on the rears. However lucky for me almost everything was seized... even down to the handbrake cables to the bracket that holds to the the handle... The rear rotors were falling apart in the vents, rust pitting was so bad I could pick it all apart with a screw driver. This was really dangerous. So then I decided to drop the rear subframe for the sake of it all.

    Once I got the subframe out, I found out I was missing 2/6 bolts that hold the diff to the subframe... axle to diff nuts were missing... all 4 concentric bolts were seized, toe rod had so much rust on the threads that the nut would come off without spinning the ball joint, plastic sway bar end links were rusted in the allen key area, all 6 diff bushings were seized to the sub frame worse than I have ever seen. It really seems like this was not the original subframe since there is no rust on this entire car except here....

    Oh but I did get lucky... it was not cracked like a lot of pre 89 ones are. So after a liberal amount of fire/heat/swearing/hammering/cutting I have the subframe free of all the bullshit attached. Now looking at it, I will be bracing/reinforcing the subframe after I get it blasted free of surface rust and i will be making custom LCA, TRACTION, and TOE arms that use the energy suspension bushings and I have a set of solid bushings for the subframe that will be going in....

    Sorry for the novel, but its been a long month.

    Pics are good though.

    ===========================

    Alright so I test fit the engine with the modified frame rails... besides needing to modify the engine mounts again, it all fits... So I started to do the welding. May not look like a lot... but trust me... it was no such thing.

    Okay, this was a whole lot of WTF... but the front subframe started to seperate? lol no idea, but when you bang the subframe again, the 2 stamped steel pieces move between each other, so I clamped them back together and welded them together... I guess I will do more on the subframe to strengthen it, but for now...

    ===============================

    Alright, so my buddy sent over a pic of my modified oil filter housing.. basically machined it down to the base and welded 2 -10an fittings to it... First set in my oil system...

    So I looked at how much room I have..... and I have none! So I had to cut and modify my driver side manifold to clear my alternator which needed to be moved to clear the oil fittings... I got a pulley off my friends 20v MR2 that works great on this alternator.

    And then to get the ball rolling and moving... I modified my rear sub frame with 3/16" steel and 1.75" DOM tubing.. reinforcing it to prevent ANY cracking. Also Quantum Auto solid billet aluminum sub frame bushings.

    Little dry ice makes everything so much easier...

    And the finished product.

    Enjoy for now...

    Some more pics of some goodies... no progress since last post... waiting on some bolts int he mail for the subframe.

    However...

    My shaved water bridges... kept the original temp sensor (now wishing I relocated it but whatever) and the rear bridge has the spot for the coolant sensor for the MS3x... other than that its cleaned up... and also turned down the head of the bolt for the bleeder to clear the FFIM better...

    Some of my oil goodies... -10an all around... relocation, adapter and cooler...

    And the start of version 3 of my motor mounts.. using poly bushings.

    ======================================

    Been awhile since I updated... new job = less time to work.. but it is what it is. Anyways, some pics over the last few weeks...

    Start of my downpipe and the rest of the stuff......

    More completed. Not sure I how I like the WG location... its the only way I can really get it to fit, but I prefer it a few inches closer... I dont foresee any issues with boost creep though, speak up if you do.

    Haha... well not much to take pictures of. Its been a lot of loose ends... starting to tie up.

    First off, the subframe is mounted in... got most of the bushings done (traction arm isnt complete in the following picture..). I had to buy new eccentric cam bolts for the arms. Very pricey, but it needs to come off jackstands eventually! I picked up Tokico Illumina rears locally for $50 to match my fronts which came on the car. So I finally have a matching complete spring/shock combo.. H&R and Tokico Illuminas... good enough for now! Ordered some parking brake parts which I broke or age broke. Diff is fully rebuilt and installed... axle cv's have been repacked... it was not my intention to do it, but I knocked the cover plate off, so I was forced to do so

    In this pic if you look closely you can see the 1.75" DOM tubing that helps brace the subframe. (above axle)

    Bought a modified Porsche oil thermostat. Has -10an fittings already welded on.. not bad for $50... opens at 175* or so like every other one.

    Bought another 4" SS Vband assembly... and bought some silver -10an hose ends to see if I like this color theme... Nice thing about silver, they wont show scratches... bad this is its kind of boring... I just feel black may scratch too fast/bad if I need to take it off without tape or anything.

    I bought a 1uzfe VVTI engine with a BHG for $100... I will eventually build this engine up for the Supra... but for now, it sits... because it was such a good deal, I had to buy it haha...

    %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
    %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

    Alright its been awhile since I updated. Besides being busy like everyone excuse... I have been having troubles with my downpipe. I cannot fit the size I want through the subframe without just hitting everything in the way. Its partially due to the manifold design. So instead of making new manifolds and wasting more time and money, I will be bumper dumping the exhaust. Yes it will be loud, but I will be making a smaller sized muffler fit without it being noticable along the way. This will allow me to run the stock location of my steering rack (had to lower it because of the DP) and stock mount location (had to move it for the DP).

    So I picked up an 89+ subframe for $50 locally and started to get everything ready to go to make new mounts etc.

    Cut a lot of pie cuts to make my tight radius bumper dumper... so when I have time this weekend I will start to work on this. I went 3.5" this time.. I didnt feel 4" was needed (except to have bragging rights) and it was really tough to fit through the subframe.. so I got 3.5" and now im having it go out the bumper anyways..... so... since its nice clean fresh tubing, 3.5" dump.

    I sold my SC400, but managed to keep the JIC seats... so those will be going in the Supra... The interior of the Supra will be black.

    And I got my Quantum Auto Feramic Clutch w/ 2050lbs clamping pressure on the pressure plate.

    So thats it for now, luckily since this DP will be resolved like so, the engine will go in as soon as I receive my clutch.... once I get everything squared away in the engine bay, I will fill the holes, make some custom heat shields, paint the bay blitz black and put all the **** back in.. again... lol.

    ==================================

    Almost no effort to put the engine in... that was a great feeling!

    I wanted to test fit and get everything good in the car before I paint the engine bay. Last thing I want to do is weld all holes shut and need to drill new ones.. or have to hammer the firewall or something... Enjoy for now... more to come

    Started to build my downpipe. I am really proud of how this is looking. Its all SS304 3.5" tubing, pie cut bends. This will eventually be heading towards the bumper.... but enjoy for now

    Alright here we go. Ordered 325ft of wire to start on the engine harness...

    And I also got a crazy bulk deal on 12an and 10an fittings.... So I started to lay those out...

    I ordered connectors for my RX7 injectors... going to buy some rebuild kits and do the rebuild and cleaning on my own... cause thats how I effin role.

    Enj0i.

    ===============

    Okay well here is another update. Not too much went on... Learned some stuff.

    I rebuilt my injectors (well I still need 2 more to buy) with Mr. Injector parts. I cleaned them out, back flushed it etc... cost me $50 instead of $160. Good alternative IMO.

    I bought new injector connectors and coil connectors. (nothing worse than broke ass connectors)

    Found that Garret parts bolt on to the HX52. Also I found an "elongated hole" T4 gasket that fits my T4i bolt pattern. Super lucky since I cannot find the gasket for this turbo.

    The rest or misc photos of the wiring.

    Wow incredible build so far. You may have a problem with boost creep but I don't see any way you can change the placement around to eliminate that. You pretty much have it in the best place possible. Generally you'd want the piping going to the wg to be inline with the exhaust gas flow. A 45 degree cut on the piping would be ideal but I'm sure you already knew this
