my journey to some lotus themed art
I was itching to hang some lotus themed art on my walls and that combined with learning how to screen print took me on a little journey to a fun piece of art I could hang. I just bought tickets to the Monaco grand prix this may and wanted to make a poster celebrating Stirling Moss' victory at Monaco in his Lotus 18 in 1961. Screen printing is new to me, and the process is very time consuming. First I drew out each part of the poster and got them ready to burn onto my screen, since each color is mixed and printed separately you do the images separately.

then you take a light sensitive emulsion and coat it on your screen...

after that dries you take your screen and place it in an exposure unit with the hand drawn images I made before. the light shoots up through the bottom passing through the white areas and burning the black ink image into the screen...

then you mix some ink and place the screen onto a hinged backingboard. then you use a squeegee and squeeze ink through the opening in the screen...

then a color is done and ready to dry! you wash out the screen and repeat the process for each color, about an hour in total just to print each color.
before

after

and here is the finished product, 18"x24" 8 color hand screened print
i have a copy at the framers right now getting ready for the wall...

Awesome stuff! Would love to get into this but the process seems expensive and too time consuming for me right now.

Nice, did you make more than one print? Considering the time you put into it I'm sure you have.

I did some screen printing a while back. Its more work compared to the digital stuff, but it lasts longer. Nice posters.
