I love his work, but I hate it at the same time.
took credit for images that photographers took and
trade mark the style that was suppose to be a universal tool
for propaganda posters as his own. Now if I try to make propaganda poster on
illustrator or photoshop, it would be label as an Obey influenced work.
I like the business side where he took something not trade marked and claimed it as his own to make millions. Anything about making it in this world I agree. I think I would at least own one print of his work. I think if he gave credit to photographers, I would have more respect for the guy.Last edited by Workaholic; 04-07-2011 at 10:48 PM.

I probably didn't follow this as closely as you, but I had a different impression of him...
My impression was that he took a "stock" image and transformed it the % required to make it his own work. I don't think he ever claimed he took the picture and he gave credit for it when asked.
Did he trade mark the style or did the media begin to label the style he used?
For some reason I don't get the impression he is an asshole stealing things and taking undue credit. I see him more as someone trying to make a difference through his art and the fame he has. Again I don't follow him much and only have a few bits of clothing, but that is my 2cents.---------

Nothing wrong with what Shepard is doing, it's artistic license. The fact that AP sued him, and was able to settle out of court is a joke in my opinion.
The fact is, if his HOPE poster didn't become the icon of the Obama campaign, no one would have cared. Guess the AP wanted their slice of the pie.

He took a stock snapshot and turned it into a propaganda masterpiece for Obama...
also he made Andre's face famous, and his "posse" is now his following in the after life.
So I think the contributions he's made to culture make him very noteworthy.

If you make a vector drawing the same pose as the photo it is still copying. I believe to be on the safe side to take your own pics, buy or agree with the photographer for the re-creation. He bought the trade mark for the style. I remember reading about it, when the whole dilemma with the Obama drawing. If you look at WW2 posters, the style are all the same. He just limited the colors and added patterns. I agree with you that he wants to make a difference with art. I think every artist wants to have the exposure as he has. I think he is brilliant for using the word Obey. The word Obey was first introduced on the film, "They Live" starting Roddy Piper. The word Obey was on a giant billboard in the movie. I'm not saying he got the idea from the film, but I would like to know if he did. Big props for that usage.

The famous Obama drawing was a photo from someone else. I remember the photographer suing him for not getting credit. I don't remember if they settled outside of court. I'm glad he got his name out there for the public to see. It's every artist dream to be known.Last edited by Workaholic; 04-08-2011 at 07:05 PM.

I'm a huge fan of Obey. I thought Exit through the gift shop was excellent.
I really want to buy an original Banksy print... Just need a spare couple grand.
