My dad (who builds race and hot rod motors) told me when I was young: "if you buy a $10,000 Civic, and put $10,000 into it, you still have a $10,000 Civic. Buy a $10,000 car, save your money and then sell the $10,000 car and combine it with your savings to buy a $20,000 car." He said that before I knew it, I would be driving what I wanted.
I have never been into heavy customizing. Although I would buy a customized car because I am getting it at market value, not the crazy money the builder put into it.

The first movie was entertaining enough and cashed in on the tuner scene at its prime. Of course, diehard car guys were appalled by the glaring technical errors and misquoting, but at the end of the day, the movie wouldn't have been so simplistically entertaining if it was laden with tech jargon.
Imagine if Paul Walker discussed the merits of a twin-scroll turbo manifold on his Eclipse and scoffed at Vin Diesel's suggestions of a 38mm vs. 44mm wastegate. That would never hold the attention of some wet-behind-the-ear highschool magazine rack racer.
The only reason I hate this franchise is for absurdly inflating the price of MKIV Supras just before I was ready to finally pull the trigger on one.

I couldn't agree more... my plan is to drive my current car for a few years, then upgrade to something nicer/faster. Of course I could take that money I save and put it into my car, but most of that goes out the window during resale, and I still have that original car in the end.
I'll probably put a few grand into it for minor mods, but definitely not going crazy.- 2012 Ducati Monster 796

Hahaha no doubt, that's why I never went down the Honda path when I first got into cars. I watched some of my friends dump all of their money into crazy Civics, and realized that the same money could buy something much nicer from the get-go.
Don't get me wrong, I like and respect a fast Honda to this day, but I'd rather save and get a 996 TT.

I was an extra in the first one... pretty fun experience, but Craig is right, a lot of worked had to be done just to improve what they originally had.
