my comments from the movie thread:
Quote:
i saw The Wrestler yesterday - it was ok but it did not live up to my (very high) expectations. the oscar hype for rourke is just that - he's good but he doesn't get any help from the script (ridiculously melodramatic and chunky / clumsy writing.)
this is clearly not Aronofsky's terrain - each of his previous movies was a masterpiece - this is not. the relationships are pure hollywood by-the-numbers without any real emotional tug; and it's this lack of any real tension that probably defeats rourke. the only area the movie shines is Aronofsky's great ability to capture mood.

on marisa and the strip club scenes:
Quote:
the soundtrack is *great* and marisa tomei as a milf stripper (with much nudity) does wonders for me.
the strip club scenes are among the best - aronofsky brilliantly captures that line between despondence, dirtiness, and desirable.

it's worth seeing, it's not bad, somewhat cliched, but it didn't come close to matching aronofsky's previous brilliance of Pi, Requiem, or Fountain; and i think he should stick to those types of movies.
