Default 3-button suits - how many buttons

i don't wear suits often enough, nor hang around people who wear suits daily, but this is driving me crazy: how many buttons should one button on a 3-button suit?

i've read that many suits are not designed for the bottom button to be buttoned; but that seems to be a tailoring/buying-off-the-rack problem to me. nonetheless, most people don't wear tailored suits so this "buttoning 2 out of 3" has become the norm.

if one's suits are tailored (mine are), button all 3?!?!? my analytical side says '3 buttons, button all 3' and i think the 2 button thing looks silly.

    anyone?

I usually go with buttoning two. Even with tailored suits. Buttoning all 3 make you look like a kid being forced to wear a suit to me. lol

I like doing all 3 but get hated on so I generally just do the middle or none (my suit was custom made as well)

Agree with Unibomber, if you get sh*t for all 3 then go with just the middle.

Never button the bottom one. It's both a matter of custom and how the suit is meant to drape. Some three buttons are made so only the middle button is to be used.

Top two. But three-button suits? Ick. I have one that I regret ever buying.

I agree 100%. I have a three button suit that I never wear. I'm pretty short so a two button suit is all i'll wear...otherwise I look even shorter!

Height is irrelevant with the three button faux paux. I'm 6'2 and it still looks out of place. Snoop is sporting 5 buttons, but frankly, I think anything more than 2 looks just as silly.

I have been reducing the buttons on my suit every 5 years, when I was 15 it was 4 buttons, then 20 i got into 3 buttons. Now I have all 2 button suits. At 30 Im buying a 1 button. Then I will never have to worry about what to button

I wear 3-button suits because I'm every bit of 6'4" and it fits my frame better.

I either button the middle button or the top two.
