I do some work with Ed Hardy and have a bit of, hopeflull helpful, advice.

Christian Audigier appeals to Many different audiences. We see his brands quite often on Celebs but you also see them on Teenagers walking down the street and 50 year old rich guys driving in Lambos! It is a pretty broad audience IMO. He has multiple Lines too.
1. Christian Audigier
2. Ed Hardy
3. SMET
4. Crystal Rock
5.Paco Chicano

He is a marketing monster and a really cool person too. He parties like a rockstar and makes some amazing clothes.

I think his look will stay around for a while just the bright ass colors might tone down a bit if anything.

I think back to the basics might be the next big thing. A simple logo or Icon on a 1 colored shirt maybe like a bit of an aged look? Hope I helped a little bit

I agree with the majority here. Clean logos and definitly none of this grafitti crap that is everywhere.

I too am starting a clothing line with a few friends next year, God willing. No info to give other than that. All on the D.L.

this is a very open-ended question.

i like my clothes to fit well - prada polo shirts are my #1 all-time favorite - mostly solid colors with just a red plastic tab on the side. and i like small details like that.

i like the idea of "crazier" polos but i haven't really seen anyone pull it off. Nice Collective (SF) has some awesome designs but their clothes fit like crap. Travatto (sp?) has cool details but their stuff is too 70s inspired for my tastes (and it rarely fits that well.) Prada had some graphic polos a few seasons ago but they looked like stuff a furry might wear, when not wearing a goat suit - way too cutesy. i have a Great China Wall polo but it feels played out (skulls - check; rhinestones - check.)

so i stick mostly w/ Prada and Etro polos as my day-to-day shirts.

Clean, intelligent designs... I'm a fan of subtlety, and really enjoy any design that makes you notice a detail on the second or third look, without trying too hard to look "clean"... A simple color palette beats "busy" any day.

Im stuck on plain and simple..... all i rock now is plain v-neck shirts... I have many colors.

i think fashion is over with the exagerated colors, more into the simple plain look. Your best bet is see what the major designers are doing and work on their direction of "popular looks and designs"

I don't really like the brands you listed (Skin, Affliction, etc.), but you gotta admit they have been really successful by tapping into a niche market. Trying to cover a canvas with one brushstroke isn't easy to do-sometimes it's best just to start with one of the corners and work your way around from there.

Hustla... it depends on where you want to take your brand.

In terms of designing apparel that is commercially viable in a broad sense, I would stick with some of the more trendy design elements and styles, mix in your own personal style also, and then do some pieces that are completely different then anyone else.

Consumers are really liking the detailed artwork on t-shirts, dresses, swimsuits, luggage and even some more formal wear.

For several reasons, the first is it's the trend and something different, some of the stuff is actually good detailed art, and it can be argued that it is more of an individual statement than paying $xxx for a solid shirt with a logo monogrammed, but most importantly until the advent of some recent printing technologies... the printing capabilities were not available as they are now to achieve these desired affects and looks as you will see reflected in a lot of brands such as Ed Hardy, Crooks & Castles, Malicious Manor, etc. etc.

So from an artist standpoint, this is very exciting to me, because it's like a new medium in some sense, I have taken some of my artwork that I have shown in galleries here in Dallas, had it photographed and used a subtle screen printing approach coupled with newer technologies to get across visually what I was going for.

If you're an artist with a really strong individual style ( like KidRobot, etc. ), then I would say target high end boutiques, hire good pattern designers and tech illustration designers to grade out your garments exactly how you want.

Go out to the shows, talk with the consumer, with the buyers and do some good PR and branding, and if you know any B or A-list celebrities it really helps.

I have been developing my line of clothes for about the past 7 months and have learned a lot and done some focus groups on some of the apparel that I've created... so I currently am in the processing of fluctuating somewhere between my personal style and what is commercially relevant.

For the record I do not own any Ed Hardy, Affliction, Kid Robot, etc. stuff.

PM me if you have any questions, or possibly need any resources available to you.
