Anyone happen to know a Shelby GT 640?
I guess there are a couple of Shelby experts on here, so my question is: which Shelby is this? It said GT 640 on the side, had 4 tailpipes and sounded even a bit louder than normal GT 500 I think. I don't recall Shelby making a GT 640, but maybe some of you guys on here recognize this model?
Thanks for the help!

I dont think they made any GT 640's. Looks like they may have done this themselves. A couple things lead me to believe they've done some mods to the car. LED's in the headlights, the GT 640 graphics dont line up with door graphics and it looks like it was a Super Snake originally (which is why it sounds louder than normal GT 500). Just my thoughts...

Yeah, I'm guessing the owner just threw some mods on it to 640hp.. then slapped 640 on the side, which is stupid because the 500 doesn't stand for its horsepower rating..

Thats not an official ford name...someone probably modified it and slapped that. I am guessing it means how much hp the car has.

About the GT500 name, after some research this is what i came up with:
Here's what's generally accepted as "the story", copied and pasted from another website:
If you turn to page 613 of the 1997 Shelby American World Registry, it has a special notation on the origin of the GT500 name. It reads as such:
Where did the GT500 name come from?
Carroll Shelby recalls that it didn't come from any dimension or quantity associated with the car. When it came time to chose a name for the new, 428 cubic-inch big block powered model, Shelby wanted something which was, "just bigger than anything else out there". Ford's top performer was the 427, but they also had the milder 428. Mercury had a 410, Chevy had a 427. Chrysler had a 413, a 426 and a 440. Buick had a 430. Pontiac had a 400, 421 and a 428. Olds had a 400 and a 455. Even Cadillac had a 429. These number all referred to the cubic inch displacement of their largest engines.
Shelby remembers thinking that the number '500' was a nice, round number. And, it was bigger than anyone else's number-even though his new car would not have 500 of anything.
'I just 'sorta' liked the sound of it. And the way it would look on those rocker panel stripes'.
And so the Shelby GT500 was born. While they were being produced, nobody else ever named a car a higher number."When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car."

Top gear did a stupid piece on it though saying how it was meant to be about it producing 500hp but it wasn't at the wheels and the entire time they complained how the stickers lie and did nothing to argue that Ford says crank hp not rear wheels. Sorry about the little bit of the rant but that's the one Top Gear episode that pissed me off.
