Default Best Diesel engine tranny combo...

in your opinion what is the best diesel production combination. For power and reliability.

I have always heard that the older 99-03 ford diesels were one hell of a combo.

a cummins with a 6spd. nothing will come close

as a powerjoke owner (we use em as work trucks and have to fix em all the time)

cummins are so good that there are kits out there to put them in ford trucks....we call em fummins and we see a lot of them.

mind you I am a rancher..so what I use a truck for might be different than others.

+1. The CTD is essentially a farm-equipment drivetrain stuffed in a truck. Monster torque and reliability.

what years are these motors in the trucks?

I want to spend 15k, is that doable? or should I just stick with the idea of a frontier? Two totally different trucks. I want reliability and mpg. Thats why I have been thinking diesel.

my 06 is for sale for a little more than that, but not much.. Its got fuel pumps, injectors, headstuds, bigger turbo with variable trim fins (ithink thats right), intake, 5" S.S. turbo-back exhaust, 2.5" lift, 35's, full gauges, every single option and the motor was replaced by ford under their head bolt warranty. So you should be able to find something for 15k pretty easily. I think Im at like $18,000 for mine... The deals on diesels right now are unbelieveable.. Everyones thinking diesel will spike over $5/gal again.. I have 9 Powerstrokes at our office now. Our F-550 flatbed has the same drive train as the 3/4 ton F250 and it has over 500,000 miles on it with only maintenance (starters, alt, fuel pumps, belts, etc) parts.. My truck has 140k with no issues and its been dyno tuned at a ridiculous amount of power. Most of my trucks have over 300k on the clock. However, we did have 2 dodges with the cummins. Both trucks needed complete injectors and head work after 200k miles.. The cost on those repairs were more than the value of the trucks. YOu can nitpick any brand down to the inth degree and find problems, but I know what works for us.. With nearly 3 million miles combined on our trucks, we keep turning back to the Powerstrokes.. Its just what works for us.

Oh, and our trucks dont leave my warehouse with less than one ton of chemical in the bed or 10k # of liquid weight on a trailer.. NEVER. So these trucks are worked hard every day and they love it.
