The 6.6 Liter Duramax first came off the production line in 2001 as the LB7. The next iteration was overall a better package starting in 2004 as the LLY, which had some very minor internal mods that lasted till 2007, althought it maintained the same code. The latest version is the LMM which is nearly the same motor except it meets much stiffer emmisions standards, and it is mated to an updated Allison Transmission.
If I were in the market I would be looking for a 2005, and then upgrade with a Banks exhaust wastegate kit.
I had a customer with a Banks kit on his 2003 and it would light the tires up in 4 wheel drive from a stop.

On the DMax a few things changed throught the years.

The 01-03 LB7 is a good motor, generally gets great mileage, but eats injectors.

LLY was from 04.5-early 06 with the 5spd allison. Overall a great motor.

06-07 got the LBZ which has more power and some slight motor differences. This truck also gets the 6spd allison which is a bit stronger.

Note: The 5spd and 6spd allisons are identical internally, it's just a valve body and programming difference, though the upgrade from 5-6 is expensive.

I have an LLY 2500HD and it's a great truck

So you should be able to find something for 15k pretty easily. I think Im at like $18,000 for mine... The deals on diesels right now are unbelieveable.. Everyones thinking diesel will spike over $5/gal again.. I have 9 Powerstrokes at our office now. Our F-550 flatbed has the same drive train as the 3/4 ton F250 and it has over 500,000 miles on it with only maintenance (starters, alt, fuel pumps, belts, etc) parts.. My truck has 140k with no issues and its been dyno tuned at a ridiculous amount of power. Most of my trucks have over 300k on the clock. However, we did have 2 dodges with the cummins. Both trucks needed complete injectors and head work after 200k miles.. The cost on those repairs were more than the value of the trucks. YOu can nitpick any brand down to the inth degree and find problems, but I know what works for us.. With nearly 3 million miles combined on our trucks, we keep turning back to the Powerstrokes.. Its just what works for us.

mind you I am a rancher..so what I use a truck for might be different than others.

hahaha, I know, its just me though! Thats why I have the diesel is for towing boats!

    I get about 13-15 at 75-80mph..And 10-12mpg towing.

I had a gas F250 before this one and towing the triple engine Baja to the lake would net me around 4mpg.. The diesel paid for itself quick..
